The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has assured the Kenyasi Prisons Camp in the Ahafo Region of government support to address post-harvest losses.
During a visit to the camp’s farms, Mr. Dumelo revealed that the ministry will soon provide a maize dryer machine to help preserve harvested maize and reduce wastage.
He explained that the donation is part of the government’s broader Feed Ghana Initiative, which promotes institutional farming as a strategy to boost food security.
Accompanied by the Asutifi North District Chief Executive and other officials, the Deputy Minister toured large-scale maize, cocoa, poultry, and oil palm farms cultivated by the camp. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that the produce is used to feed inmates and generate income for the facility.
“The Ministry, led by Hon. Eric Opoku, is committed to supporting the Kenyasi Prisons Camp with the necessary equipment to minimize post-harvest losses. The maize dryer will go a long way to address their major challenge,” Mr. Dumelo said.
He also encouraged other institutions in the region to participate in the Feed Ghana programme by establishing their own farms.
The Acting Commander of the Kenyasi Prisons Camp, CSP Elvis Ahadzi, welcomed the Deputy Minister’s assurance and appealed for swift delivery of the maize dryer. He stressed that with adequate government support in maize, poultry, cocoa, and oil palm cultivation, the camp could expand production to contribute significantly to national food supply.
