Ernest Chemists Ltd (ECL) held a grand media event in Accra on Friday, February 6, 2026, to launch its 40th Anniversary celebrations.
The event was performed by Dr. Hafez Adam Taher, Director of Technical Coordination at the Ministry of Health, on behalf of the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. Key stakeholders from regulatory bodies, industry associations, and the media were in attendance. Also present were the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Ernest Bediako Sampong, CEO Adjoa Akyema Sampong, other directors, management, and staff of ECL.
The highlight of the launch was the grand unveiling of the 40th-anniversary logo, jointly performed by Dr. Taher, the Chairman, the CEO, directors, and representatives of regulatory institutions.
Hon. Mintah Akandoh, whose speech was read on his behalf by Dr. Taher, acknowledged ECL’s significant impact not only on Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry but also on the economy as a whole. He lauded the company for living up to its brand promise of providing quality and affordable medicines, and noted that the founder’s actions give the country hope that Ghana can excel in pharmaceutical manufacturing with the right leadership.
He added that without the mentoring and support of Mr. Ernest Bediako Sampong, Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector would have been largely dominated by foreign players. He urged ECL to pursue expansion beyond Ghana to support the government’s program of making the country a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa. The Minister also commended ECL for constructing the soon-to-be-commissioned state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) factory—the first of its kind in Ghana—and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting its operationalization.
Delivering her speech, CEO Adjoa Akyema Sampong traced the company’s history, stating that through dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, ECL has grown to become a market leader with 50 wholesale and retail outlets, as well as manufacturing and warehousing facilities across the country.
She highlighted the company’s presence in other African countries, including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia, where some of their products are exported. Guided by its core principles and brand promise, ECL continues to provide quality and affordable medicines.
As a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, Ms. Sampong noted that ECL’s contribution to national development spans multiple sectors, with one of its most significant impacts being the creation of over 1,500 direct jobs for Ghanaians.
On corporate social responsibility, she emphasized that ECL has consistently supported individuals and institutions across the country through donations and sponsorships. The company’s retail outlets also provide free health services, including blood pressure checks, rapid diagnostic tests, weight and BMI measurements, and health counseling.
