What was meant to be a celebration of four years of hard work and resilience turned into a moment of grief for final-year Biological Science students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The class concluded their academic journey with a symbolic group photograph inscribed with ‘J.Y,’ in honor of their late coursemate, Miss Joana Deladem Yabani, who was tragically murdered last semester.
Joana, a promising 22-year-old student, lost her life while preparing for last semester’s examinations.
Her body was discovered near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre and was later pronounced dead at the University Health Services.
Investigations led to the arrest of 21-year-old Daniel Tuffuor, also a final-year student believed to have been in a relationship with Joana.
Police confirmed that CCTV footage placed him near the scene, wearing the same attire observed during the crime. The case is currently before the court, with the next hearing scheduled for September 15, 2025.
For her coursemates, the ‘J.Y’ signature photograph serves as a lasting tribute to Joana, keeping her memory alive as they prepare to graduate and reminding the university community of a bright young life cut tragically short.
