The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Ghana Scholarships Authority, established under Act 1149 and approved by President John Dramani Mahama, to strengthen the regulation and administration of scholarships in the country.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister said the establishment of the Authority fulfills a key commitment to end nepotism and partisan influence in the awarding of scholarships.

He emphasized that scholarship awards should no longer be based on individual discretion, but guided by a structured institutional mandate vested in the Authority.

Hon. Iddrisu explained that scholarship decisions will be anchored on merit, genuine need, specific beneficiary categories, and national development priorities.

He further urged the Authority to uphold high standards of accountability and transparency to ensure public confidence in the scholarship system.

In response, the Chairperson of the Board, Mr. Samuel Garba, thanked the Minister and the President for the confidence reposed in the board. On behalf of members, he assured that the Authority is committed to investing in Ghanaian youth while operating with competence, integrity, and strong ethical values.

The Governing Board comprises representatives from key institutions, including relevant sector ministries, the Office of the Attorney-General, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Students Loan Fund, civil society organizations in education, the Ghana Scholarships Authority Secretariat, and nominees of the President.
