The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has stated that current economic challenges make it difficult for the government to commit 0.5 per cent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF), as proposed by the Fund’s Board.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement organized by the GNRF, the Minister explained that the state of the economy and Ghana’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme limit the government’s ability to meet the requested funding level.

While acknowledging the importance of sustained investment in research and innovation, Mr Iddrisu noted that a GDP-based allocation is impractical under current conditions.

Earlier, the GNRF Board, chaired by Professor Yirenkyi Danquah, had indicated that a 0.5 per cent GDP allocation would allow the Fund to operate at full capacity and effectively support national development.

Despite these constraints, the Minister assured stakeholders of the government’s ongoing commitment to research and knowledge advancement, affirming that annual support will continue through the Common Fund to strengthen Ghana’s research capacity.
