The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
In a press release issued on January 16, 2026, the Commission said the seat had become vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, making it necessary to conduct a by-election.
The EC stated that nominations for prospective candidates will be received at its Ayawaso East Municipal Office at North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
Interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the Commission’s website from Friday, January 16, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
Completed nomination forms may be submitted by the candidate or through a proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the designated office.
According to the Commission, nomination forms must be endorsed by two registered voters in the constituency as proposer and seconder and supported by 18 other registered voters. Each candidate must also submit two recent postcard-sized photographs with a red background.
The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000 per candidate, while female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500.
The Commission has urged the general public and prospective candidates to take note of the timelines and requirements ahead of the by-election.
