The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has assured residents of Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding communities that the Daboase Water Treatment Plant will be completed by May 2026, a development expected to significantly improve water supply in the Western Region.
The assurance was given after the Minister inspected the project site with the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work despite some operational challenges.
“We have the Sekondi Water Project, which is progressing smoothly. They are not behind schedule as such. There are a few challenges that the government is addressing, but the project can be completed by May 2026,” Mr Adjei said.
He explained that once commissioned, the facility would ease the burden on households that have endured irregular water supply for years.

“I want to assure the residents that very soon, water will be flowing steadily to their homes,” the Minister added.
The project manager for Strabag, the firm handling the expansion, Vlad Falup, said a new treatment chamber has been introduced to improve water quality while reducing dependence on chemicals.

“This innovation will help reduce overall chemical consumption in water treatment while improving efficiency,” he noted.
The Daboase Water Treatment Plant draws raw water from the Pra River, which has been heavily polluted by illegal mining activities, compounded by challenges related to ageing infrastructure. These factors have constrained the plant’s output over time.

The ongoing expansion, which was launched with a sod-cutting ceremony in the last quarter of 2024, is designed to increase daily production by about 22 million gallons.
When completed, the project is expected to provide a more reliable and efficient supply of potable water to Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding communities.
