The Accra High Court has dismissed an application by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, seeking to lift a freezing order on one of his company’s bank accounts.

The application, which aimed to overturn the Financial Intelligence Centre’s (FIC) freeze on Paradise Insurance’s account, was refused by the court. The case has now been adjourned sine die.

In April 2025, the FIC froze all bank accounts linked to Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining as part of investigations into alleged financial irregularities. The action was taken under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), which empowers the FIC to restrict access to accounts where there is reasonable suspicion of illicit financial activity.

The freezing order is tied to ongoing criminal proceedings against Chairman Wontumi over alleged violations of Ghana’s mining laws.
