The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has announced that the salaries of more than 2,000 public sector workers that were temporarily suspended will be restored once their employment status is verified and the necessary clearance processes with the Ghana Audit Service are completed.
According to the Department, the suspension followed recommendations from the Auditor-General and was implemented in line with Public Financial Management (PFM) regulations, which require strict oversight of government payroll systems.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, said the action forms part of ongoing efforts to clean up the public sector payroll while ensuring that genuine workers are not unfairly affected.
“The Auditor-General conducted a nationwide headcount exercise last year and, just last month, wrote to us indicating that about 6,000 officers did not participate and therefore should not be paid,” he said.
However, Mr Agyei explained that subsequent checks by the CAGD significantly reduced the number of affected workers.
“After our internal analysis, we realised that only about 2,000 officers were actually affected, as issues relating to the others had already been resolved,” he noted.
He stressed that the salary suspension was not punitive but intended to allow proper verification.
“As a result, we suspended the salaries and wrote to their respective institutions to inform the affected staff to avail themselves to the Ghana Audit Service for verification,” Mr Agyei said. “Once the Auditor-General completes the process and formally notifies us, we will immediately reactivate their salaries.”
The CAGD reaffirmed its commitment to transparent and accountable payroll management, emphasizing that salaries will continue to be processed strictly in line with PFM regulations to protect public funds while safeguarding the rights of public sector workers.
