The Paramount Chief of the Chonke Traditional Council in the Oti Region, Dasebre Atamafowiese Bonja, has appealed to the government not to divert the proposed construction of a bridge over the Oti River away from Dambai township.
According to the chief, rerouting the bridge from Dambai would adversely affect economic activities in the area.
Under the government’s Big Push initiative, plans have been announced to construct a bridge over the Oti River to address transportation challenges faced by residents who currently rely on ferries and canoes to cross the river.
Dasebre Atamafowiese Bonja noted that the bridge would significantly improve safety, particularly in view of the frequent boat accidents on the river. However, he expressed doubts about whether the project would be completed, citing the prevalence of abandoned infrastructure projects across the country.
Speaking to Adom News, the traditional ruler called on the government to secure the necessary funding to ensure the timely completion of the bridge.
Meanwhile, some residents have raised concerns that diverting the bridge away from Dambai township would negatively impact business activities. They urged the government to consider situating the bridge closer to the regional capital, arguing that such a move would enhance connectivity between the southern and northern parts of the Oti Region and strengthen economic interactions with Ghana’s northern corridor.
