According to the lawyer, name-calling and biblical symbolism will not bring the development the constituency needs.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Baidoo said he does not believe in slogans or political taglines, arguing that serious issues such as development, jobs, and improved living conditions should be the priority in Akwatia’s political discourse.

“I am not someone who talks too much or believes in name-calling. That is the nature of the NPP, but I am not that kind of person. I am not Joshua, and that is not important to me,” Baidoo remarked.

His comments come after the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, likened himself to Joshua in the Bible, appointed to complete the mission of Moses, while promising to continue the developmental vision of his predecessor and late MP Ernest Kumi.

But Baidoo challenged the symbolism, questioning the timing and relevance of such declarations.

“When did he become Joshua? He has been in Akwatia for a long time. Or did he become Joshua only after the NPP acclaimed him as their candidate? You can even call yourself Jesus, but it is your work that will prove who you really are,” he stated.

The NDC candidate emphasized that the people of Akwatia are more concerned about tangible results than political rhetoric.

“As Joshua, what is he taking the NPP to do in the promised land? What is he going to do for Akwatia? That is what matters to me, and that is what the people of Akwatia want to hear,” Baidoo stressed.

The contest, set for September 2, 2025, is already shaping up to be a high-stakes battle, with both candidates promising transformation for the constituency.

Citing a biblical reference, he noted that just as Moses began leading the Israelites toward the Promised Land but Joshua was chosen to finish the task, he has stepped in to continue the late MP’s vision for the constituency.

“I know Ernest Kumi was passionate about developing Akwatia. He wanted real transformation, and that is the exact mission I intend to fulfill if given the mandate,” he said while addressing constituents.

Mr. Asumadu added, “I am the Joshua of our time. As Joshua led the Israelites to the Promised Land, I have been chosen to lead Akwatia to its own promised land. I am a man of action, not just words. Everyone who knows me can testify to that. I do not have to depend solely on the common fund to assist my people. My commitment is to bring progress to Akwatia, opportunities for the youth, and development for all.”

The much-anticipated by-election, following the death of Mr. Kumi on Monday, July 7, 2025, has been scheduled for September 2.

Mr. Asumadu has expressed confidence about his victory, vowing to create a 10,000-vote margin over his main opponent, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

Mr. Bediako, who also serves as the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akwatia, polled 380 votes in the primaries held on Monday, August 4, 2025. He defeated close contender Erasmus Ali Korney, who secured 366 votes, and former MP and 2024 parliamentary candidate Henry Boakye Yiadom, whom he previously represented as legal counsel, with Mr. Yiadom garnering 226 votes.

His victory drew mixed reactions, largely due to his decision to contest while his former client was also in the race.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Bediako explained that his entry into the race was prompted by calls from the grassroots.

“I was done with my work as a legal representative and took over my political hat. The branches and some stakeholders impressed upon me to come in and change a certain narrative. That is why I contested, and the delegates believed in me,” he said.

He described Mr. Yiadom as a father figure and revealed that they continue to share a strong bond despite the primary contest. According to him, Mr. Yiadom has been instrumental in shaping his campaign strategy for the upcoming polls.

“Just after the election, he asked me to bring my strategy so we hit the ground working. He has been with me day and night for this campaign together with other bigwigs. They believe in the strategy we are using,” he added.

Mr. Bediako stressed that the Akwatia by-election is a fresh contest and should not be linked to the legal challenges that followed the 2024 parliamentary elections.

“If the court had ordered a re-run, I wouldn’t have had any chance to contest because that would have been wrong. But this is a fresh election with a new NPP candidate and a new NDC candidate,” he clarified.

Taking a swipe at his main opponent, Solomon Asumadu of the NPP, Mr. Bediako noted that unlike the NDC, whose former aspirants have rallied behind him, his rival lacks the backing of those who previously expressed interest in the NPP race.

The Akwatia by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Of this number, 600 officers recently completed a five-day intensive course at the High-Risk Operations Training Centre in the Eastern Region. The training covered rappelling, precision shooting, crowd control, handcuffing, vehicle checks, and human rights considerations.

The remaining personnel will receive instruction in public order management ahead of the polls.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, together with the Police Management Board, supervised the closing session of the training, which included a live simulation exercise.

During the drill, undercover officers acted as voters at a polling station before the scene was disrupted by armed men attempting to seize ballot boxes. Police countered with tactical formations, arrested the suspects, and transported them in a Black Maria vehicle. Drones were also deployed to demonstrate remote monitoring and rapid response.

The simulation further featured precision target shooting and rappelling demonstrations, where officers showcased their ability to neutralize threats with minimal risk to civilians.

Speaking after the exercise, the IGP assured the public that the police are fully prepared to safeguard the by-election.

“We want this to be remembered as one of the most peaceful elections in our history. If you come to vote peacefully, you will be welcome. But if you come to cause trouble, we are ready to stop it before it escalates,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the officers for their commitment and called on all stakeholders to respect electoral guidelines to ensure a smooth and credible process.

A statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, outlined the procedures aspirants are required to follow in order to contest.

The by-election follows the passing of the Member of Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in the helicopter crash of August 6.

Per the guidelines, nomination forms will be available at the NDC’s Northern Regional Office, where completed forms are also to be submitted. After vetting, a certified delegates list will be issued to all approved aspirants.

The party indicated that aspirants must pay a non-refundable nomination fee of GH¢5,000. In addition, a filing fee of GH¢40,000 is required, payable only in cash into the party’s official account at UMB Bank, Adabraka Branch.

Female aspirants and persons with disabilities will enjoy a 50 percent reduction on the filing fee. The party stressed that cheques and bankers’ drafts will not be accepted, insisting that all payments be made directly into the designated account.

An official timetable has been attached to the guidelines, and the NDC has urged aspirants and stakeholders to strictly observe the deadlines. The statement also called for fairness, unity, and decorum throughout the process.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not field any candidate for the by-election, which the Electoral Commission (EC) has set for September 30.

He gave the assurance during a meeting between executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Police Administration in Accra on Wednesday, August 20.

Dr. Yohuno emphasised the critical role of the media in Ghana’s democratic process, stressing that the police service considers journalists as allies rather than adversaries.

“No policeman will attack you, we are here to protect you,” he affirmed. “It is our duty to protect you because, without you, nobody would know what is happening.”

He highlighted the importance of journalists in keeping the public informed, particularly during national events such as elections. According to him, media coverage ensures that people outside the electoral area can still follow developments in real time.

“Somebody might be at home and not in Akwatia, but they can see what is going on there better, thanks to you,” the IGP noted.

Dr. Yohuno further disclosed that police officers have been directed to exercise restraint and professionalism when dealing with journalists, especially those filming or documenting electoral activities.

“We’ve told our officers that the brothers and sisters holding cameras and phones during elections must be treated with moderation. Without them, people at home would have no idea what’s going on,” he said.

The IGP stressed that the police do not view the media as outsiders but as partners in safeguarding democracy. He also acknowledged the role of the media in shaping public perceptions and elevating the profiles of many public officials, including himself.

“We’ve passed the stage where we see the media as a separate group. They are part of us. Some of us wouldn’t have our names known without the media,” he remarked.

Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Yohuno said the suspects are currently being processed and will soon be arraigned.

“As of yesterday, eight suspects had been arrested. They are being processed, and based on advice from the regional commander, they will appear before court either tomorrow or Friday,” he disclosed.

The IGP assured that the police remain committed to ensuring justice, stressing that officers who fail to act professionally will also be held accountable.

He further addressed concerns about the police officer who assaulted a journalist during the rerun, clarifying that the officer was not transferred, as widely speculated, but interdicted.

“We immediately withdrew the officer and interdicted him. When an officer is interdicted, their uniform is taken away, and they cannot return to work. The rumour about his transfer is completely false,” he said.

According to the IGP, the Police Professional Standards Bureau has already completed its investigations into the incident.

“I have received the report, and a service enquiry will be conducted into his conduct. Disciplinary action will follow as recommended,” he confirmed.

Mr. Yohuno added that the service is determined to ensure accountability both among civilians and within the police force.

Addressing recruits at the Police Training School in Kyerematen, Eastern Region, Mr. Yohuno assured the public that the Service is fully prepared to maintain peace and order before, during, and after the polls.

“We want to assure Ghanaians that the police are ready to handle any situation that may arise in Akwatia. We have the men, we have the resources, and our eyes are red for Akwatia. Nobody should think of causing trouble,” he stressed.

The IGP warned political parties and individuals against mobilising people to foment confusion, snatch ballot boxes, or disrupt the electoral process. He said security measures have been strengthened, and political stakeholders have been briefed accordingly.

To reinforce order, Mr. Yohuno disclosed that the Service will deploy special prison trucks, popularly known as Black Marias, to the constituency. These vehicles, he explained, will be used to make swift arrests and detain offenders.

“We are going in with Black Marias, the prison on wheels. Anyone who causes trouble will be picked up, kept inside, and later transferred to the police cells,” he said.

The Police Service has, therefore, urged all citizens and political actors to cooperate to ensure a peaceful by-election.

The petition challenged the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary elections in the Adansi Asokwa constituency.

In delivering his ruling, the presiding judge noted that K.T. Hammond and his legal team had failed to appear in court on four consecutive occasions.

As a result, the case was dismissed, and the former MP was fined GH¢60,000 in costs to be paid to the defendant.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Dorani expressed satisfaction with the court ruling. He explained that following his election victory, Mr. Hammond rejected results from 13 polling stations and asked the court to annul them and order a re-run.

The lawyer for the former MP, Richard Ahdi, added that the repeated absence of Mr. Hammond and his counsel had caused his client significant financial loss. He explained that he had urged the court to impose GH¢150,000 in costs, but the judge, in his discretion, settled on GH¢60,000.

The Electoral Commission (EC) declared the Akwatia seat vacant following the passing of MP Ernest Kumi, paving the way for the contest.

Speaking to journalists in Akwatia on Sunday, August 17, Mr. Bediako said the NDC is actively engaging voters across the constituency.

“We are moving through towns and communities to share our message. Today being market day in Akwatia, we started there to engage the people. We want them to see why voting for me and the NDC will bring the needed development to Akwatia,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstrated its strength with a Unity Walk to rally support for its candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

The walk, led by Eastern Regional Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo and other regional leaders, attracted thousands of party faithful. They were joined by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, constituency executives, polling station representatives, and grassroots supporters.

Chants, music, and placards filled the streets as participants marched through Akwatia. Organisers described the massive turnout as evidence of the NPP’s determination to win the September 2 by-election.

NPP candidate Solomon Asumadu, meanwhile, remains optimistic, asserting he will defeat Mr. Bediako by a 10,000-vote margin.

“I am glad this question about my education has come up. Sometimes, if you don’t know someone, you may treat them with disdain. I earned my first degree in Human Resource Management from All Nations University, Koforidua, in 2008. After completing my national service at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), I ventured into business,” he explained.

He dismissed claims that his opponents or other professionals hold an advantage over him.

“Just because someone is a lawyer doesn’t mean they are more educated or speak better English. Education starts long before your first degree. English was a key part of my academic journey, so I am confident in my abilities,” he stressed.

Mr. Asumadu described himself as “educated and learned,” confident in his capacity to represent the people of Akwatia effectively in Parliament.

Mr. Asumadu insists that his main opponent from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Bediako Baidoo, poses little challenge to his chances.

“So when it came to the 2024 election, it was like a medical officer took the whole election system to a laboratory to diagnose and found a solution and made recommendations on what to do, especially with regard to ballot accounting and other things that will help us win the election and in fact he did very well,” Mr. Gunu eulogised.

The minister noted that Dr. Omane Boamah’s ability to merge medical precision with political strategy reflected his rare blend of professional expertise and patriotic commitment.

He emphasised that his role should not be forgotten. He also mourned the other six, describing their loss as the loss of a national asset.

“In fact, in the morning, we had a close discussion with Dr. Omane Boamah around 7 am. It was virtual, because he mostly conducts meetings online. He was a type who wanted to maximise time. Instead of people coming together physically, he would say, ‘Let’s use social media platforms for our discussions.’ So most of our meetings in the run-up to the election were held virtually,” Rashid Tanko-Computer recounted on JoyNews’ PM Express.

The Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) said this approach was typical of Dr. Boamah, whose meticulous planning shaped the NDC’s electoral operations.

“He started the day we were appointed, and we had our first meeting in then-candidate John Mahama’s office in 2023. That was the day I realized the NPP were preparing to disrupt the 2024 election,” Tanko-Computer said.

Recalling the final meeting, he added, “Around 7:45 am, Dr. Omane was giving us strategies on how to approach the Akwatia by-election. He gave us all this guidance because Dr. Omane was a master planner. He would sit down, map out the strategy with pen and paper, assign tasks, and then we would implement them. He trusted us to deliver an A+. That is how he worked.”

Tanko-Computer further revealed that the team was expected to report back to Dr. Omane Boamah by evening.

“So that morning, we had completed all our tasks and were to report back, but he didn’t tell us he was travelling. None of us knew he would be on that flight.”

Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight people who died in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. President John Mahama has announced a high-level Investigative Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the tragedy.

This development follows the NPP’s decision to withdraw from the pending Tamale Central by-election amid calls for the NDC to also pull out of the Akwatia polls as a mark of respect for the late former Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, a native of the region.

In a statement signed by Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC commended the NPP for not fielding a candidate in Tamale Central after the death of MP Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed in the August 6 helicopter crash, calling it “the best decision they have taken in recent times.”

However, the party suggested the NPP’s move was less about honouring the late MP and more about avoiding a potential defeat while gaining public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia contest.

“This is not the first time a political party has refused to contest a by-election,” the NDC noted, citing its own decision to step aside in Ejisu following the passing of John Kumah.

The statement also reminded the public that Akwatia’s parliamentary seat had been under legal dispute prior to the death of the late Ernest Kumi.

Further, the NDC cautioned voters against accepting the NPP’s public declarations at face value, recalling instances where the ruling party reversed its position after initial announcements.

“In the Ablekuma North rerun, the NPP declared they would not contest but were the first to mobilize on the ground,” Mr. Gunn pointed out.

Extending condolences to the family of the late Ernest Kumi and the relatives of the “gallant eight heroes” who died in the helicopter crash, Mr. Gunn urged NDC supporters to exercise restraint in public commentary.

“Let us be mindful of our comments in this time of mourning,” he advised.

Nana B, as he is popularly known, said such a move would mirror the NPP’s decision not to contest the Tamale Central by-election, following the death of its MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

He argued that, given the NDC’s loss of five prominent members in the crash, the party should refrain from engaging in active politics immediately after the state burial.

“We are mourning with them. So, for me, you have a stalwart like honorable from the Eastern Region, I would say that right after the state burial, then we enter into such fierce contest, for me, it will not serve his memory right,” he said on Joy FM on August 11.

Mr Nana Boakye referenced recent incidents, including violent clashes in Ablekuma and the devastating helicopter crash, as reasons to prioritise national unity over partisan competition.

“I believe that right after laying such stalwarts to rest, plunging into a fierce contest would not serve their memory well. With the current mood of the nation, lowering the political temperature would be the right thing to do,” he explained.

He added that even though that is his personal expectation, “we leave it to them.”

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025, after a brief illness.

He was 40 years old.

A coalition of over 490 Youth Organisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), comprising substantive and deputy youth leaders from constituencies across the country, has declared full support for former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in January 2026.

The declaration was made during a strategic meeting on July 29, 2025, where members unanimously expressed confidence in the 2024 Presidential Candidate’s “exceptional leadership, proven track record, and clear vision for Ghana’s future.”

In a statement issued after the meeting, the coalition commended Dr. Bawumia for his “unwavering dedication to national development, digital transformation, sound economic reforms, and his steadfast commitment to empowering Ghanaian youth.”

They added that his “innovative policies and forward-looking style of governance make him the right leader to guide Ghana beyond 2028.”

As part of their show of support, the group announced plans to mobilise resources to pick Dr. Bawumia’s nomination forms on Wednesday, August 13, at 9:00 a.m.

“Our mission is to energise the youth base across the country, ensuring a strong and vibrant grassroots movement in the run-up to the elections,” the statement said.

“We are convinced that Dr. Bawumia has the ability to build an inclusive, resilient, and prosperous Ghana. This is not merely a political endorsement; it is a solemn commitment to shaping a better future for the next generation.”

The coalition also urged “all well-meaning Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to rally behind Dr. Bawumia in his continued quest for economic resilience, job creation, and national progress.”

According to the statement, the endorsement has the “blessings of our Regional Youth Organisers and the majority of polling station youth leaders across the country.”

Dr. Murtala, who doubled as the Minister for Environment, Technology, and Innovation, was one of the victims who perished in the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.

His passing has left the Tamale Central seat vacant, triggering constitutional procedures for a by-election under Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution.

Although the Electoral Commission is yet to announce the modalities for the by-election, the NPP has explained that the decision was reached during a National Steering Committee meeting on Monday, August 11, 2025.

The statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong noted that the resolution, grounded in Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution, was shaped by the circumstances surrounding the vacancy and a desire to avoid heightening political tensions during a period of national mourning.

“It would be inhumane and insensitive to subject the country to a highly competitive process to find a replacement for the late MP,” the statement said, adding that by-elections in Ghana often carry tension and acrimony that should be avoided at this time.

The NPP further stated that the best way to honour Dr. Murtala and the other crash victims is not only to step up efforts against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey but also to ensure a calm, respectful, and non-contentious transition in filling the seat.

“When the Electoral Commission opens nominations for the Tamale Central by-election, the NPP will, in the national interest, refrain from participating,” the statement concluded.

He joins a growing list of party stalwarts who have signalled similar ambitions, including 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

A longstanding member of the NPP, Dr. Oppong-Peprah has been active in party affairs for over a decade, particularly within the Ashanti Region. He has contested the party’s parliamentary primaries in the Asante Akyem South constituency three times and played a key role in regional campaign planning and logistics. He also served for eight years as Chief Patron of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) at Kumasi Technical University.

Beyond politics, Dr. Oppong-Peprah is known for his academic and development work. He holds a PhD in Engineering Management with a specialisation in infrastructure finance and lectures in entrepreneurship and finance.

He is associated with two ambitious development initiatives: a proposed “Entrepreneurship Village” and a planned university city in the Ashanti Region. Both projects are aimed at fostering long-term economic growth and improving higher education infrastructure, although they remain under review.

Dr. Oppong-Peprah has outlined a detailed and pragmatic vision for Ghana’s transformation. His development blueprint centres on seven strategic pillars:

1. Modern agriculture and mechanised farming

As the NPP looks ahead to its future beyond the 2024 elections, interest in the 2028 leadership race continues to grow.

The party officially opened nominations for the flagbearership on July 29, 2025, with a deadline set for August 28. Vetting of aspirants will take place from September 15 to 22, with recommendations expected to be submitted to the National Council by September 29.

Petitions can be filed between September 30 and October 3, followed by a joint NEC and National Council meeting on October 7 to finalise approvals. The list of qualified aspirants will be published on October 8.

According to the EC, interested aspirants must download nomination forms between July 30 and August 13, and submit the completed forms to the Returning Officer at the Denkyembour District Office within the nomination window.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee described the reports circulating on social media as “malicious” and “false.”

“I wish to state unequivocally that such headlines, captions, and statements are false and are only intended to create public disaffection for me,” he said.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour emphasized that he has never, at any time, issued threats of bloodshed or violence in any electoral process.

“I want to assure the general public that under no circumstances will I be involved in acts of violence—much less threatening the same,” he added.

Reaffirming his long-standing opposition to electoral violence, he pointed to his consistent public calls for peace and accountability.

“I have on many occasions urged the State to take steps to prosecute perpetrators of such offences to serve as deterrence and to prevent violence and bloodshed in future elections,” the MP noted.

He urged the public to disregard the reports and “treat them with the contempt they deserve.”

Rev. Fordjour also cautioned those behind the false claims to desist from such actions, warning that they harm the reputations of innocent individuals and pose a threat to national peace and stability.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Gbande stated that while the NDC is committed to a peaceful campaign, it will not tolerate lawlessness. He emphasized that individuals wanted for crimes will be arrested if they show up in Akwatia.

“We will go to Akwatia peacefully. But anybody who goes there to cause mayhem will be arrested—especially those already wanted for crime. When they step foot in Akwatia, we will cause the police to arrest them,” he warned.

Mr. Gbande alleged that some NPP appointees are wanted for offences including money laundering, visa racketeering, and corruption.

“There is evidence to that effect. When they come to Akwatia, they are not on their way to Parliament, so the police will lay an ambush and arrest them,” he added.

He singled out Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, claiming he is “wanted for slapping a policeman” and will face arrest if he visits the constituency.

Mr. Gbande also accused the NPP of turning a blind eye to recent acts of violence allegedly committed by its members in the Ablekuma North constituency.

“Ntim Fordjour is threatening that if nothing happens to those involved in the violence in Ablekuma North, there will be violence in Akwatia. Some NPP members are already inciting violence, but the party has not condemned it,” he noted.

Despite the tensions, he assured the public that the NDC will run a peaceful, people-centered campaign.

“We will campaign very peacefully, engage the people, and go into the primaries to select a marketable candidate who resonates with the people,” he said.

Mr. Gbande further declared, “The NPP must know that we, the NDC, will not be violent, but we will let the law take its course. As citizens of this country, we have the cardinal responsibility to cause your arrest.”

“I am in this race because people think I am well cut for it. I have top party bigwigs calling on me every now and then to represent the party. And when such calls come, it becomes difficult to turn down the request,” he explained.

“I am not surprised he is in a different camp because I believe we all have the freedom to do as we please. I never knew him personally, but I gave him an opportunity to serve based on a recommendation. I trained him, and he did his job well while it lasted, and I commend him for that,” Dr. Adutwum noted.

He acknowledged the concerns about Mr. Kwarteng’s alignment with the former Assin Central MP but emphasized that every party member has the right to choose their own path.

Dr. Adutwum further revealed that some key figures currently backing his campaign were previously aligned with other aspirants, underscoring the importance of unity ahead of the 2028 elections.

“I am not pained that he is supporting another aspirant because it is the same party. When God helps me and I become flagbearer, I believe Kwasi Kwarteng will come back home,” he said.

He expressed confidence that Mr. Kwarteng would throw his support behind him should he emerge victorious in the flagbearer race on January 31, 2026.

Dr. Adutwum added that internal competition should not sow division within the party, stressing that the bigger goal is securing victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.

Running on a campaign of transformational leadership and educational reform, Dr. Adutwum has positioned himself as a unifier determined to bring all factions of the party together.

After breaking away from supporting President Paul Biya earlier this year, Bello Bouba Maïgari is running in a presidential race for the second time in his political career.

The same goes for Maurice Kamto and Cabral Libii, with both also changing political party affiliations for the elections.

The flood of applications meanwhile remains dominated by men: out of the 81 total applications, only seven female candidates declared their intention to run in the presidential elections, among them Eliane Véronique Eboutou and independent candidates, Mbengono Zouame Epse Ndzie Ngono Guyleine and Géneviève Zeh Amvene.

Biya’s grip on power is unlikely to be broken. Among the men, it is the incumbent President and oldest head of state in Africa Paul Biya who dominates the list.

The 92-year-old, who has held power for the past four decades, recently declared his intention to run for office again despite growing concerns over his health and ability to lead the country.

Some local media speculated that the number of candidates could point to a growing wish for political change from the population, as well as a fracturing of Cameroon’s political landscape.

Despite Biya’s age, the President’s grip on power is unlikely to loosen through elections whose democratic nature is doubted, according to analysts.

Last week, Biya also reshuffled top military ranks in what was seen as a way to ensure his renewed run for the presidency would have the army’s backing.

The country now waits for the decision of the electoral council, set to approve or reject each application in the coming weeks. The final list of candidates can be published at the latest 60 days before the election.

Mr. Gyekye cited her record of development and support for entrepreneurship during her tenure as MP, which, he said, have endeared her to the people and intensified calls for her return.

“Despite other potential contestants, Ama Sey is the clear choice for the NPP to retain the seat,” he said, urging the party’s leadership to heed the calls from the grassroots.

Ama Sey is credited with defeating National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Baba Jamal in the 2016 general election. However, she narrowly lost the NPP parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2020 elections to the late Mr. Kumi by just four votes. She contested again in the 2023 primaries but lost to him a second time.

The report, submitted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, details violent incidents that marred both elections, including shootings and clashes between political party supporters and security personnel.

According to the findings, eight people were killed during the 2020 elections, while three others lost their lives in the 2024 polls. Several others sustained injuries across various constituencies.

The IGP’s report was submitted in response to a directive issued by President Mahama shortly after taking office. This follows sustained calls from civil society organisations for accountability and transparency in addressing politically motivated violence.

By referring the report to the Attorney-General, President Mahama aims to ensure justice for the victims and to explore legal measures that will help prevent similar occurrences in future elections.

Clad in NDC colours, the elated supporters cheered as Aubynn took the oath of office, pledging to serve her constituents with dedication and integrity.

Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, welcomed her warmly and described her entry into Parliament as “a reinforcement of the NDC’s growing momentum.”

He assured Ghanaians that the caucus would not take its two-thirds majority for granted or abuse that right, but would meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was necessitated after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the original December 2024 parliamentary results over allegations of electoral irregularities and the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets.

Miss Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.

This was revealed by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen following the party’s successful National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.

“By next week, we will open nominations for the presidential primaries, and it will be at least before July 31. It is in accordance with the constitution, which directs us to give at least six months’ notice before the election,” he stated.

He added that the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, will at the appropriate time provide full details of the nomination procedures.

Addressing concerns raised by some supporters of aspirants who felt the former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was given an unfair advantage during the conference, Nana B appealed for calm.

“The focus should be on the overall success of the conference, rather than isolated incidents or perceptions,” he stressed.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s address at the conference was justified by his status as a former Vice President and presidential candidate, and should not be misconstrued as an endorsement or signal of preference by the party.

Nana B commended the event’s organising committee, led by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu, and praised all stakeholders whose efforts ensured a successful conference.

He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful presidential primary, and called for support from all quarters to safeguard the party’s democratic processes.

The NPP presidential primaries have been scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Even before the official opening of nominations, prominent party figures including former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong have expressed interest in contesting the slot.

Dr. Bawumia is yet to formally declare his bid, but he is widely seen as the leading contender.

Speaking on Adom TV’s The Big Agenda, Mr. Toobu, who is also Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, said the police acted with professionalism despite the tense and chaotic scenes.

“As former capo, I will score the police 98% because tension was high, but they made sure no one died,” he said.

The former Executive Secretary to the late Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante Apeatu, explained that election-related security differs by context.

He noted that when a single constituency is in focus, political energy and tensions tend to concentrate there, especially when multiple polling stations are involved.

“The police did well in managing the Ablekuma North re-run chaos, because if not for their intelligence and hard work, it could have been worse than what happened,” he added.

The chaos occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the centre and attacked several people, including former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers overpowered the security presence at the time.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with the Ghana Police Service assuring the public that investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

According to the Ofoase Ayirebi MP, the document contains sensitive material, including internal strategies and what he described as the party’s “trade secrets.”

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, the former Information Minister explained that the decision aligns with standard practice among political parties both in Ghana and globally.

“It’s not unusual. No serious political party publishes every detail of its internal assessments. That would be like giving away your game plan,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah stressed that although a full public release is off the table, the party has made available a summary version of the report, which highlights key findings and recommendations.

“No, we will not be publishing that report to the general public. Political parties don’t do that because it also contains some trade secrets, sensitive information. So no political party does that,” he clarified.

He added that the condensed version is already informing the party’s internal review and guiding upcoming reforms.

“The summary that we believe captures it, we have put it out and we have responded to or we’ve started the process of responding to it,” he added.

Oppong Nkrumah also dismissed suggestions that the party has failed to critically assess its loss in the 2024 elections.

“But you see, whoever should be the president of this country, we are not looking at just the qualification, eligibility criteria for whoever should be our president,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added.

The former Suame MP stressed that the focus must be on leadership qualities, not just the ability to contest.

“We are not just looking for a flagbearer,” he declared. “We are looking for a president or a presidential candidate.”

He referenced a key moment in the party’s political history, recalling the caution issued by party elder Kwame Pianim in 2007, when 17 aspirants vied to succeed then-President J.A. Kufuor.

“Pianim stepped in and made a profound statement that ‘NPP, you’re not looking for a flagbearer. People seem to think that we are looking for a flagbearer.

“As for the flagbearership, any idiot could become the flagbearer.’ But we are looking beyond the flagbearer, because you are looking for a presidential candidate who ultimately will become the president of this country,” he recalled.

Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, Mr Kodua expressed shock at what he described as a sudden U-turn by the EC, despite the NPP’s confidence in its victory based on pink sheet evidence.

“The National Executive Committee of the party is dissatisfied with the decision by the EC to do a rerun in some 19 polling stations. We have all our scanned copies of pink sheets in the 281 polling stations, which gave us a clear win of 414 votes. Therefore, we were surprised that the EC decided to call for a rerun.”

Mr Kodua described the rerun as disturbing and warned that such actions could undermine public trust in the electoral process and the credibility of the nation’s democratic institutions.

“We felt that it was a wrong decision, and it is a bad precedent set by the EC. This is very dangerous for future politics and future elections.”

The EC’s decision to conduct a partial rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency stems from concerns raised over irregularities in the parliamentary election results in certain polling stations during the 2024 general election.

The rerun has since sparked criticism and political tension, particularly from the NPP, which maintains it had secured a legitimate victory.

Addressing the National Delegates Conference in Accra on Saturday, he urged party members to rekindle their commitment and work tirelessly to reclaim power in the 2028 polls.

“We cannot, we must not allow 2024 to become the year that destroys the NPP,” he said.

Acknowledging the disappointment following the outcome of the election, he emphasised the need for unity and renewed energy going forward.

“We must become a party of Ghana, talking to Ghana. Our constituency executives must master every polling station, our polling station chairpersons must know every voter, our electoral area coordinators must understand every community’s dream.

“We cannot rebrand ourselves through better slogans; we must rebrand ourselves through better results and strong character,” he added.

The NPP lost both the presidency and parliamentary elections in 2024.

The party lost the majority of its parliamentary seats to the NDC and now has 87 seats following the death of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

However, Afenyo-Markin has encouraged that the electoral loss must inspire the party to pursue strategic rebuilding.

He admonished party structures at all levels to remain active and forward-looking with the aim of winning the 2028 polls.

The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed that the police officer who slapped journalist Kwabena Banahene Agyekum during the Ablekuma North rerun has formally been charged with assault.

This was contained in a statement that provided an update on investigations into the violence that marred the election on Friday, July 11, 2025.

“In line with due process, the police officer captured in one of the videos assaulting a journalist, who was interdicted, has been held on criminal charges of assault.

“The police have reviewed and are analysing several videos that captured the incidents at the polling stations to identify all persons involved,” the statement read in part.

The Command added that it has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations.

“The police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will be effected soon. Meanwhile, the victims involved in the incidents have been issued police medical report forms,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all persons responsible for acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during the elections will be held accountable under the law.

“We encourage the public to cooperate with the police and share any credible information by contacting us on emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” it urged.

The seat is yet to be formally declared vacant following the sudden death of the MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

During proceedings, the Bawku Central MP raised concerns about the delay in officially announcing the vacancy, referencing Parliament’s visit to the late MP’s family.

“Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk of Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after becoming aware. Mr. Speaker, if Ghanaians ask the Clerk if they are aware or not, can he say he is not aware?” he questioned.

He continued, “After being informed by the Leader of the Caucus through a statement in this House, the Clerk himself followed up at his house and met the family members of the deceased, and they confirmed to him that the deceased had passed. And this was on national television.”

Responding to the concerns, Speaker Alban Bagbin explained that Parliament must first receive official communication from the bereaved family before the Clerk can notify the Electoral Commission. “We cannot act without formal notice,” he emphasised.

Tensions heightened when Ayariga alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had already begun circulating campaign posters featuring the late MP’s widow, Mavis Kumi, suggesting her interest in contesting the upcoming by-election.

The Minority described Ayariga’s comments as insensitive and ill-timed, stating that they politicised a moment of grief. In protest, they exited the chamber.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he argued that the government delivered strongly on its mandate across key sectors but failed to effectively carry its support base along, leading to voter disengagement.

“Maybe the only thing we failed to do was to carry along our membership, a greater portion of our members, and some got quite frustrated, and therefore refused to go and vote,” he said.

He dismissed criticisms about the government’s performance and strongly defended the record of the Akufo-Addo administration in economic management, institutional development, and job creation.

“But in terms of performance, and I’m being very sincere with you, I think Nana Akufo-Addo’s government did very well,” Mr. Blay insisted.

He maintained that the administration made significant strides in building infrastructure, strengthening institutions, and improving sectors such as health, education, and security.

“In terms of handling the economy, building infrastructure, building institutions in this country, both political and security institutions, hospitals and education—I think his government did very well,” he said.

Highlighting what he sees as one of the administration’s most notable achievements, Mr. Blay added, “In terms of even providing employment in the history of this country, that government did extremely well.”

In an eight-page petition dated Tuesday, July 15, and copied to the Council of State and the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Botchway cited Article 278(1)(a) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to set up a commission to investigate matters of public interest.

“Article 278 (1) of the 1992 Constitution provides that the constitutional mandate of the President… can be invoked at the pleasure of the President or upon the advice of the Council of State or at the request of Parliament,” the petition noted.

Mr Botchway argued that the rerun, ordered after unresolved results from the 2024 general elections, was characterised by what he described as “a coordinated campaign of violence” involving intimidation, physical assaults, and serious breaches of human rights.

The petition recounts several alleged incidents backed by video evidence. Among them was the brutal assault of former Member of Parliament and Minister of State, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was allegedly attacked by over 20 unidentified men at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church Polling Station.

“Despite having accreditation to monitor the elections on behalf of the NPP candidate, Madam Hawa Koomson was attacked and stomped by unidentified macho men,” the petition stated.

Journalists were not spared either. Joy News reporter Sally Martey was reportedly slapped and shoved on live television by a masked individual, while Amansan TV’s Vida Wiafe was

pepper-sprayed by security officers, causing her to collapse. Other victims included GHOne’s Kwabena Agyekum Banahene and NPP Deputy National Organiser Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, both of whom were physically assaulted.

“This petition borders on the fundamental human rights of citizens, injustice, abuse of power, and unfair treatment,” Mr Botchway stressed. “These matters are of considerable significance and weight to satisfy the pleasure of the President.”

Drawing from precedent

The petition also referenced the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019, which led to the formation of a Commission of Enquiry. Mr Botchway believes the Ablekuma North incident warrants similar treatment.

“It is unfortunate that, over three decades of practicing democracy, Ghana cannot hold violence-free elections… The petitioner deems it necessary to bring to the notice of the President activities of violence which… warrant the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry,” the petition stated.

Demands and concerns

The legal practitioner called for a probe into human rights violations, particularly against journalists and election observers.

He accused elements within the Ghana Police Service of overreach and brutality, citing the alleged assaults on media professionals as examples of unprofessional conduct.

He further questioned the National Election Security Taskforce’s failure to deploy adequately on the day of the rerun, stating that their absence contributed to the chaos.

Mr. Botchway also called for scrutiny of the Interior Minister’s role, suggesting a possible lack of oversight or dereliction of duty in addressing security lapses during the election.

Among the key reliefs sought, Mr. Botchway demanded compensation for victims and an independent inquiry to determine accountability.

He stressed that the issue transcends individual grievances and affects the broader principles of justice, democracy, and rule of law.

“The petitioner herein brings this matter before the President for his consideration, based on the President’s legal mandate to establish a commission of inquiry to enquire into the matters espoused,” he concluded.

The petition is expected to generate public interest amid growing calls for electoral reforms and accountability in Ghana’s democratic process.

According to her, she recognised two or three individuals involved in the attack, including the husband of a sitting MP, although she could not confirm his name.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mrs. Koomson said some of the attackers were from Kasoa and described the incident as a targeted attempt on her life.

“All I saw was that they were advancing towards me. Someone was holding a cutlass, declaring that they would finish me today. There was this other short guy with an orange sleeve wearing a jacket and camouflage shorts, and he usually walks with the MP’s husband,” she alleged.

She recalled that former Okaikoi South MP, Darkoa Newman, who was with her at the time, was visibly shaken and urged her to flee, but there was no escape route.

The altercation, which occurred at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling centre in Odorkor on Friday, July 11, 2025, temporarily disrupted voting and triggered an increased security presence.

The former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture maintained that she had no prior knowledge of any planned violence and would have avoided the event had she received any warning.

“There were more than 30 guys coming towards me, and I couldn’t have faced them as a woman,” she said.

The violence reportedly began when a group of unidentified individuals overpowered police officers stationed at the polling centre.

Viral videos captured the moment Hawa Koomson used pepper spray on her attackers—an act she insists was in self-defense. One individual is seen stepping on her groin after she fell to the ground, moments before police rescued her.

Addressing criticism of her actions, she said:
“I couldn’t have watched on and done nothing for them to kill me because one of them had a gun, and I’m grateful to God it wasn’t fired. I could have died.”

She further revealed a history of political attacks against her.
“Exactly a year and a month ago, my son was stabbed at a registration centre unprovoked,” she said.

Mrs. Koomson has called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing, although no arrests have been made yet.
