Former Black Stars defender Hans Adu Sarpei believes Ghana still has time to sharpen its game ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite a disappointing run of recent results.
The senior national team, as part of their preparations, suffered back-to-back defeats in international friendlies against Austria and Germany. Ghana were handed a heavy 5–1 loss by Austria before narrowly falling 2–1 to Germany.
Sarpei, while expressing concern over Ghana’s late collapse against Germany, noted signs of progress in the team’s performance compared to the earlier defeat.
“Germany are a very good team, so losing 2–1 is not necessarily a bad result. However, when you are level going into the final minute, you need to fight to at least secure that one point,” he told Joy Sports.
He added that the response after the Austria defeat was encouraging.
“After the 5–1 defeat to Austria, the response we showed against Germany was encouraging. We played much better, but there is still room for improvement.”
The defeats led to the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, leaving the Black Stars without a manager with just 70 days to go before the tournament kicks off.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by Kurt Okraku, has indicated that a new head coach is expected to be appointed within the next two weeks as the team continues preparations for the global showpiece.
