Black Queens coach seeks longer camp before 2026 WAFCON

-

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is hoping for an extended pre-tournament camp as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana sealed qualification for the continental showpiece in style, thrashing Egypt 7-0 on aggregate in the final qualifying round to secure their place in Morocco.

With the tournament drawing closer, the Swedish tactician believes a longer camp will be vital in sharpening the team’s competitive edge.

“I would love it if we could stay together for a couple of weeks before the tournament (WAFCON) starts,” Björkegren told Joy Sports.

“That is something we will take a good look at now that we have qualified for the WAFCON. It depends a little bit on the FIFA window and all those kinds of things, but that time really helps us when we can spend more time training, meeting, and getting together.

“Otherwise, it’s difficult when you only have like two or three trainings and just two games because that time together makes all the difference if we can have it,” he added.

Although qualification has been secured, the Black Queens will resume action with a high-profile friendly against England on December 2 at St Mary’s Stadium — a fixture set to mark the start of their road to WAFCON 2026.
