Residents of Amomaso in the Berekum West District of the Bono Region have raised concerns over a strong and persistent stench emanating from a nearby poultry farm following the death of several chickens.

Some residents told Amansan Somakrofo that the unpleasant odour has lingered for about four days, making living conditions uncomfortable for people residing close to the farm.

Speaking to the media, Nana Yeboah Asuama, owner of Nhyira Farms and Nkosuohene of Amomaso, explained that the mass death of the birds was allegedly caused by inadequate feeding.

He said officers from the Environmental Health Department were contacted and initially visited the farm but failed to return to address the situation, leaving residents exposed to the offensive smell.

A resident, Madam Gifty Oteng, who lives near the poultry facility, said the stench has disrupted their daily activities and raised fears of possible airborne diseases. She appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to prevent any potential health risks.

Meanwhile, the manager of the poultry farm, Mr Richard Agyei, confirmed that a significant number of birds had died but assured the public that steps were being taken to maintain cleanliness at the facility, particularly within the housing area of the chickens.

Mr Agyei acknowledged that such challenges could occur in business operations and said efforts were underway to resolve the situation. He disclosed that the farm initially had about 10,000 birds, nearly half of which had died.

He attributed the losses to financial difficulties at the early stages of the business, compounded by insufficient feed and the resignation of some workers.

“As a beginner in the business, we faced financial challenges. We did not have enough feed, and some workers also resigned, leaving me to manage alone, which contributed to the deaths,” he explained.
