The Member of Parliament for Damongo and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has defended former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting he did nothing wrong during the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Jinapor said his support for Dr Bawumia was based on conviction, adding that he would not have backed him if he had not seen leadership qualities in him.
According to him, Dr Bawumia’s campaign in the Northern and Savannah regions was successful, and his message resonated across the country.
He dismissed claims that support for Bawumia was driven by regional or ethnic considerations, describing such arguments as flawed.
Mr. Jinapor noted that many of Dr Bawumia’s strongest supporters come from southern Ghana, stressing that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not a sectional party.
He cautioned against attempts to divide Ghanaians along North-South lines, stating that such divisions have no place in Ghanaian politics.
He maintained that Dr Bawumia is supported because party members believe he is the right candidate to lead the NPP to victory.
Mr. Jinapor further urged that promoting unity and national identity remains key to sustaining Ghana’s peace and democratic progress.
