The Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs has cautioned that any annulment of the recent National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in the constituency could trigger violence.

The warning forms part of efforts by the traditional leaders to urge the party to uphold the victory of Baba Jamal Mohammed, despite an ongoing investigation into alleged vote-buying during the polls.

The controversial primary was held on February 7, 2026, to select the NDC’s candidate for the March 3 by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Baba Jamal, Ghana’s recalled High Commissioner to Nigeria, narrowly defeated Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.

However, the election was quickly engulfed in controversy following widespread reports of inducement. Viral videos circulating on social media allegedly showed delegates leaving the voting venue with items such as television sets and cash.

The allegations triggered swift action at the national level. President John Mahama recalled Baba Jamal from his diplomatic post to safeguard the integrity of the process, while the NDC constituted an investigative committee. The party’s parliamentary caucus has also called for the annulment of the primary and sanctions against any individuals found culpable.

Against this backdrop, the Ayawaso Council of Zongo Chiefs addressed the media at a press conference, where they warned of possible unrest should the party order a re-run.

Responding to a journalist’s question on whether a fresh primary could spark violence, the Council’s Vice Chairman, Tanko Ibrahim, answered in the affirmative.

“There is something like that. That is what we are trying to avoid. We know what we are doing,” Mr Ibrahim said.

“So, if the result is kept the way it is, I think we will live peacefully,” he added.

The chiefs argued that the outcome of the primary should be allowed to stand, noting that no election is without challenges, and openly declared their support for Baba Jamal.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s investigative committee is expected to submit its findings soon. The party is yet to announce a timeline for its final decision, which many say will test its commitment to internal democracy and party discipline.
