Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has condemned the alleged assault on a journalist by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) during coverage of the Kasoa New Market fire outbreak, describing the incident as unacceptable.

In a strong reaction, Kwakye Ofosu said firm action would be taken against any fire service personnel found culpable, stressing that attacks on journalists carrying out their lawful duties would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The incident involved Samuel Addo of Class Media Group, who was allegedly assaulted while covering the devastating fire at the Kasoa New Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality.

The attack reportedly occurred at the height of firefighting operations, as tensions flared between fire officers, traders, and some local youth at the scene.

Eyewitnesses said the situation escalated after some residents and traders attempted to assist firefighters in extinguishing the blaze, while others filmed the operation. In the ensuing confusion, three people, including the journalist, reportedly sustained injuries.

Samuel Addo further alleged that GH¢20,000 went missing during the assault.

The alleged attack has sparked public outrage, with media advocacy groups and journalists calling for a thorough investigation and accountability. Authorities are expected to commence investigations to establish the facts and ensure appropriate disciplinary action where necessary.
