The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South in the Ahafo Region, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, has expressed concern over the misuse of public waste bins installed in Hwidiem to improve sanitation.
Speaking during a clean-up exercise in the town, Mr. Donkor told Adom News that the district assembly had placed waste bins along major streets to promote proper waste disposal. However, some residents have been abusing the bins by dumping human excreta and household refuse into them.
He explained that the persistent misuse initially forced the assembly to remove the bins from the streets. After further consideration, the district has decided to reintroduce them, coupled with intensified public education.
The DCE noted that ongoing sensitisation efforts aim to help residents understand the proper use of the bins and the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Health Analyst for Asutifi South, Yaw Adusei, and a resident, Akyaa Marfoh, warned that sanitation offenders would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
They also urged residents to actively participate in the government’s sanitation day initiative as part of collective efforts to combat filth and improve environmental hygiene in the district.
