Chiefs of the five communities where Newmont Gold Ghana operates in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region, together with the district assembly, have commissioned a new dormitory for the Kenyasi Prisons Camp.
At a brief commissioning ceremony, the Apersemakahene of Kenyasi No.1, Nana Yeboah Asuamah, and the District Chief Executive for Asutifi North, Hafiz Dauda, explained that the existing dormitories at the camp were in poor condition.
The chiefs of Kenyasi No.1, Kenyasi No.2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso therefore decided to use part of their royalties from the Mineral Development Fund, with support from the district assembly, to construct a new dormitory for inmates.
They appealed to the management of the Prisons Camp to maintain the facility so it would last and serve its purpose, adding that doing so would encourage the five traditional councils and the district assembly to continue supporting the camp in addressing its challenges.
Receiving the facility, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Lawyer Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, commended the chiefs and the district assembly for identifying a major challenge facing the camp and taking bold steps to resolve it.
She urged other traditional authorities and assemblies to emulate the initiative to improve conditions at prison camps across the country. She further assured that the Prisons Service would properly maintain the facility and provide beds and mattresses for the inmates as expected.
