The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has intercepted a large cache of ammunition during a security operation at the Asankare police barrier.

According to the Deputy Regional Police Commander, ACP Cephas Arthur, officers stationed at the checkpoint stopped a commercial bus with registration number GT 5771-18 that was travelling toward the northern part of the country.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, along with two bulletproof vests and protective helmets.

ACP Arthur said the retrieval forms part of intensified police operations aimed at preventing crime and ensuring public safety, particularly during the festive season.

He assured residents that the police command has put in place adequate security arrangements ahead of December 31, 2025, to protect lives and property across the region.

He also appealed to the public to take personal safety measures, including securing their homes, to reduce the risk of robbery and other criminal activities.

Investigations into the origin and intended destination of the ammunition are ongoing.
