An Assembly Member for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area in the Agona East District, Ishmael Odoom, is in critical condition after he was shot during a daylight robbery at Agona Asafo.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at “Me Na Ye” Junction, a suburb of the community.

Mr. Odoom and his friend Bright Adobah had visited a branch of U Fresh Company in Agona Asafo to purchase drinks intended for pupils who were expected to participate in Independence Day marching activities.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Mr. Adobah said that shortly after they had bought the drinks and loaded them onto an “aboboyaa” tricycle, a group of armed robbers, including a woman, attacked them.

The attackers, reportedly armed with guns and cutlasses, opened fire during the confrontation, shooting the Assembly Member before seizing two sacks of “Ghana Must Go” bags believed to contain large sums of money.

Mr. Adobah further alleged that although police officers were stationed at a checkpoint close to the scene, they did not intervene during the robbery.

He said the injured Assembly Member was rushed to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Mr. Adobah also claimed that the owner of the beverage company attempted to resist the attackers and managed to shoot one of the robbers. However, the suspect reportedly escaped into a nearby bush despite sustaining a gunshot wound.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for the Agona East District, Samuel Oscar Mensah, has expressed shock over the incident, noting that the robbery occurred near a police barrier.

He said the district assembly would work with security agencies to strengthen measures aimed at protecting lives and property in the area.
