Asante Kotoko opened their 2025/26 Ghana Premier League campaign with a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Berekum Chelsea at Golden City Park on Saturday.
Both sides fielded strong line-ups, but the first half ended goalless as defenses dominated proceedings.
After the break, neither team made changes, and the deadlock was finally broken in the 79th minute.
Midfielder Hubert Gyau’s tireless work in the centre of the park won back possession for Kotoko, and his pinpoint long pass found Albert Amoah.
The forward sprinted into the box and produced a low, clinical finish that beat the Chelsea goalkeeper, who could do little to stop the decisive strike.
Kotoko defended resolutely in the closing stages to secure all three points, providing a timely confidence boost ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Nigeria’s Kwara United next week.
The victory also ended a 15-year wait for Kotoko to defeat Chelsea at Golden City Park. Amoah’s performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Elsewhere in the Ghana Premier League, defending champions Bibiani GoldStars claimed a 2-1 win over Bechem United.
Samuel Atta Kumi was the standout for the Miners, netting a brilliant brace, while Marvin Oppong scored a consolation goal for the Hunters.
