Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen, has called on the party to rescind plans to take legal action against the newly rebranded United Party led by Alan Kyerematen, describing such a move as unnecessary and counterproductive.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Kukurantumi show, Nana Obiri Boahene said he would never advise any member of the NPP to go to court over the matter. “We shouldn’t tolerate them because it will make them feel important. What hasn’t happened before?” he asked.
His comments come after the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Kabiru Tia, disclosed that the NPP was considering legal action over the use of the “United Party” name, one that carries historical significance in Ghana’s political history.
But Mr. Obiri Boahen believes such a decision would be misguided.
“Why go to court over this? The United Party is dead on arrival,” he said, adding that the NPP should focus on more pressing national issues rather than dignifying what he called “a yellow T-shirt movement.”
He further questioned why the NPP, which is currently in opposition, would engage in public back-and-forth with a group that, in his view, lacks political weight.
“Any serious politician, intellectual, or academician will tell you to ignore them. Even Cheddar’s movement performed better in the 2024 elections,” he remarked.
He argued that political maturity demands restraint and perspective.
He referenced past NPP stalwarts such as B.J. Da Rocha and Appiah Minkah, urging the current leadership to learn from their example.
“We need to be serious in this country. There are pressing issues like galamsey still hanging on our necks. No serious-minded person will give credence to this issue,” he concluded.
