The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akyemansa District, Linda Ahenkora, has denied allegations that she bribed water guards to release individuals arrested for illegal mining activities.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Ms. Ahenkora described the claims as false, insisting she has been actively involved in combating illegal mining (galamsey) in the district.

According to her, since assuming office, she has overseen the arrest of about 12 suspects and the destruction of more than 200 chanfan machines used in illegal mining operations.

She added that the district assembly, in collaboration with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Blue Water Guards, has seized several boats and mining equipment from illegal miners.

Ms. Ahenkora noted that some of the arrested suspects have already been arraigned in court, while the seized equipment will be dismantled and sold as scrap to generate revenue for the assembly.

Expressing optimism about ongoing interventions, the DCE said these efforts will soon help eradicate illegal mining activities in the district.

“It is not accurate to say that there are galamsey activities in my district. I do not believe that the Blue Water Guard would claim that I bail out people caught for illegal mining. We are united in the fight against illegal mining in my area. We have seized numerous boats and chanfan machines.

“Additionally, we have enlisted the help of gas wardens to dismantle these confiscated items and sell them to scrap dealers to generate income for the assembly. We have seen improvements due to our interventions, and I believe that soon we will be able to eradicate galamsey activities. NAIMOS, in collaboration with the Blue Water Guards and the Assembly, has arrested at least 10 to 12 individuals, some of whom have already been arraigned in court,” she said.
