The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has criticised the heavy security deployment during the Akwatia by-election, describing it as intimidation targeted at New Patriotic Party (NPP) strongholds.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Baafi questioned why more than 200 police officers and several armoured vehicles were deployed to Akyem Wenchi, a predominantly mining community with a population of fewer than 5,000.
“In a community like this, when you deploy such a huge number of security personnel and armoured cars, what signal are you sending to them? It’s intimidating for the people,” he argued.
The by-election, held on September 2, 2025, was won by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako, who secured 18,199 votes (54.3%). His closest contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, polled 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) garnered 82 votes.
The election was triggered by the death of the sitting NPP MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in July 2025.
