Akwatia by-election: NPP accuses NDC of using military to intimidate voters

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the National Security Secretariat’s Director of Operations, Richard Jakpa, of deploying soldiers to intimidate residents ahead of the Akwatia by-election.

At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, August 27, NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, alleged that Jakpa was seen in Akwatia accompanied by soldiers, reportedly telling residents to leave the town before the polls.

Ahiagbah labelled the action as “provocative,” arguing that the Ghana Police Service—already planning to deploy 5,000 officers for election security—was fully equipped to maintain peace without military involvement. He warned, “Any soldier involved in the Akwatia by-election will be considered and dealt with as a thug.”

The NPP spokesperson directly appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to prevent any military interference in the by-election.

The Akwatia by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, has become a political flashpoint, with both NPP and NDC trading accusations of intimidation and foul play.
