Akwatia by-election: Ablekuma North violence can’t repeat itself – Miracles Aboagye

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against attempts to replicate the violence that marred the Ablekuma North re-run during the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr. Aboagye said the party has drawn lessons from the incidents in Ablekuma North, where clashes left several people injured. He stressed that the NPP will not allow a repeat of such unrest in Akwatia on September 2, 2025.

“We learned lessons from Ablekuma North, so it will not repeat itself in Akwatia. If we see that the NDC wants to try that, we will protect ourselves,” he warned.

Reflecting on the Ablekuma North re-run, he admitted that the NPP had not been fully prepared, as at one point it considered withdrawing from the process. This left many members exposed and vulnerable to attacks.

“In Ablekuma North, we didn’t even walk in groups because we had clear minds and consciences. But in Akwatia, I will be with friends who can protect me. I don’t know how to fight, but I know the value of being safe,” he explained.

Mr. Aboagye described the Ablekuma North incident as a reminder that “the NDC can attack and beat you in the name of democracy if you are alone.” He stressed the need for greater vigilance this time, adding that while the NPP is committed to peace, it will not allow its members to be attacked.

“The NDC must be cautious not to repeat what they did in Ablekuma North in Akwatia because they will not succeed. There is no way the NPP will allow the NDC to even attack one person; we will intervene,” he said.

The NPP communicator further highlighted the party’s campaign strategy in Akwatia, which he described as Go TV—a door-to-door mobilisation drive aimed at encouraging eligible voters to turn out on election day.

“Our focus is to canvass and rally people to vote. This is our democratic right. We must not fight each other but go through the election peacefully and smoothly,” he added.

The Electoral Commission (EC) announced a by-election in Akwatia following the vacancy created after the death of the sitting MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, after a short illness.

Political analysts say the contest will be fiercely competitive, given Akwatia’s history as a swing constituency.
