The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has paid a working visit to the management of Ghana Post to brief them on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) planned decongestion exercise and to seek the state postal operator’s cooperation, particularly in areas where Ghana Post properties have been encroached upon.

According to the Mayor, the visit forms part of a broader stakeholder engagement initiative by the AMA, involving security agencies and heads of institutions in communities earmarked for the exercise.

He explained that the Assembly considered it necessary to formally notify affected institutions ahead of the operation to ensure coordination and minimise disruptions.

Mr Allotey indicated that some Ghana Post properties, including an enclave at North Kaneshie, are among locations affected by encroachment.

He said the AMA deliberately chose to engage Ghana Post early as a sign of respect and to promote smooth collaboration when the decongestion begins.

Addressing concerns over the sustainability of past decongestion exercises and the re-emergence of traders at unauthorised locations, the Mayor said the earlier operation served as a test case, noting that Accra had not experienced a major decongestion drive in several years.

He explained that the AMA adopted a more humane approach, emphasising that enforcement must be accompanied by the provision of alternative trading spaces to prevent displaced traders from returning to unauthorised areas.
