The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has appealed to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from contesting any by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
His call follows the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away on Sunday, January 4, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Allotey said allowing a non-competitive by-election would be a mark of respect for the late lawmaker.
He indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would take a decision that best serves the interests of the constituents.
“We are not going to struggle over this, and I think and hope that our opponents will not come to contest this election so that we will just do it peacefully as a sign of respect for him,” he said.
The Accra Mayor emphasised that peace and respect for the deceased MP should guide all political actions surrounding the by-election process.
