The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called for intensified education on agricultural insurance to protect farmers from devastating losses during disasters.
Speaking on Adom News, Dr. Agyemang, who is also an insurance expert, noted that although insurance companies provide agricultural pool policies, many farmers are unaware of them.
As a result, disasters such as droughts, floods, fires, bird flu outbreaks, and livestock diseases often wipe out farmers’ investments without any relief.
He stressed that with proper awareness and uptake of insurance, government would not have to shoulder the heavy financial burden of compensating farmers, as seen during the 2024 drought and livestock disease outbreaks.
Dr. Agyemang urged farmer associations, including peasant, cocoa, fish, and pig farmers, to take advantage of these policies as a safety net.
He further called on government to lead a nationwide education campaign, particularly in cocoa-growing areas, to ensure farms are adequately covered.
“Over the years cocoa has been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, yet government has not shown interest in ensuring all cocoa farms are insured. This must change if we are to avoid dire consequences in the event of future disasters,” he warned.
He concluded by urging both farmers and government to prioritize insurance as a safeguard for the agricultural sector.
