The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the arrest and detention of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, describing it as part of a growing pattern of political harassment under the current government.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said Abronye’s arrest for allegedly insulting the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu, reflects a disturbing attempt to weaponise state security against dissenting voices.
The NPP accused the Mahama-led administration of prioritising the intimidation of opposition members over addressing pressing national security challenges, including recent communal clashes in Bawku, Nkwanta, and Gbeniyiri.
The party further argued that Ghana’s laws provide civil remedies for defamation rather than criminal prosecution, warning that the arrest risks reviving the “culture of silence” that ended with the repeal of the Criminal Libel Law in 2001.
“Equally, we are calling on President John Mahama and the NDC government to put an immediate stop to the continued weaponisation of state institutions against perceived opponents. The latest institution that is being weaponised by the government against political opponents is the guardian of the rule of law — the nation’s judiciary — after unlawfully removing the Chief Justice of the Republic on flimsy grounds,” the statement added.
