The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a suspected armed robbery syndicate following two intelligence-led operations at Krofrom and Mamponteng near Kumasi, resulting in the arrest of the alleged gang leader and the death of a key suspect.
The first operation, conducted on March 26, 2026, led to the arrest of 27-year-old Munir Ali, also known as Petit. He sustained gunshot wounds during a shootout with police while attempting to flee and later died at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ali had participated in multiple robberies across the region, including attacks on commuters along the Obuasi-Dunkwa road on March 10, 2026.
He also admitted involvement in robberies at Manso Mpatasie, Manso Odaho, and Mankranso, and linked the syndicate to criminal activities in Tarkwa and Aflao. Police recovered an unregistered pistol, one spent cartridge, and two live cartridges from him.
Before his death, Ali identified several accomplices, including Dauda, Orlo, Bash, Emma (alias Abodie), and Atta Kakra (alias A.T), as well as the alleged gang leader, Obey, reportedly in possession of two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action shotgun.
Acting on this information, police launched a second operation on March 28, 2026, at Mamponteng, resulting in the arrest of 28-year-old Osmanu Razak, the suspected kingpin. Razak admitted involvement in multiple robbery incidents, including the Mankranso and Kunsu Wiaso attacks and a robbery in Tarkwa, but denied participation in the Aflao case. He also confirmed that some gang members, including Bash, remain at large with high-powered weapons.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
“We are on the heels of the remaining members of the gang, who will soon be arrested and brought to book,” the Command stated.
Police have reiterated their commitment to combating violent crime and urged the public to provide credible information to support ongoing operations.
