Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has urged President John Dramani Mahama not to cite international relations as a reason for delaying action on the LGBTQ Bill.

Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM, he argued that several African countries, including Senegal, are strengthening their laws on the issue while still maintaining strong relationships with foreign partners.

According to Rev. Opuni-Frimpong, Ghana should be able to make decisions in its national interest without undue concern about external pressures.

Referring to the recent withdrawal of the Lincoln Doctorate award, which had initially been conferred on the President but later rescinded over his stance on the LGBTQ Bill, he said such developments should not deter the government from doing what is right for Ghanaians.

He also cited global political examples, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, to highlight that countries often prioritise internal values and policies despite international considerations.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong emphasised that youth development and the nation’s future should be treated as a top priority, urging government to consider the long-term implications of its decisions.

He warned that failing to address the issue could undermine ongoing investments in education and infrastructure, as the next generation may not uphold the intended legacy.

He therefore called on the President to act decisively and ensure policy decisions align with the values and expectations of the nation.
