The chiefs and youth of Nkaseim have urged President John Dramani Mahama to commission a responsible cooperative mining programme in the community to curb illegal mining (galamsey) and tackle unemployment.
At a press conference, the Dabihene, Nana Yentumi Boateng, explained that the government, with support from the Member of Parliament, Alhaji Collins Dauda, had secured a concession from Newmont Gold Ghana for the responsible cooperative mining programme. However, he noted that the initiative has yet to be commissioned.
According to him, Nkaseim is rich in gold, and commissioning the programme urgently would help end illegal mining by local youth while also addressing the community’s high unemployment rate.
The Sompahene, Nana Yaw Sarpong, along with a youth representative, Sir McCarthy, added that during the previous government, youth were heavily involved in illegal mining. Since the current government assured them of the responsible cooperative mining programme, the galamsey menace has largely subsided.
They emphasized that the presence of the responsible cooperative mining programme in Nkaseim would benefit the community significantly, urging the President to expedite its commissioning.
