Former Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, has called on Ghana’s football authorities to prioritise the appointment of a world-class coach for the Black Stars as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His remarks come after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) parted ways with head coach Otto Addo following disappointing results, including a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart and a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria in Vienna. The GFA has stated that a new coach will be appointed in due course.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Baah Agyemang endorsed the decision to dismiss Addo but stressed the need for a high-calibre replacement capable of delivering results at the highest level.
“It is a good call,” he said.
“My concern now is: who are we employing? Let’s go for a top-notch coach. Let’s dedicate good money to top-class coaches. Any coach available for 200,000 USD monthly who can get us results, let’s give it to him. There should be no nepotism in appointments. We should get a world-class coach,” he added.
He also called for transparency in the selection process, warning against favouritism in appointments.
Addo’s second stint in charge of the Black Stars ended with a record of 22 matches: eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats.
Several experienced coaches have reportedly been linked with the vacant role, including former Ghana boss Kwesi Appiah, who is currently managing Sudan, former Morocco coach Walid Regragui, as well as Marc Brys and Tom Saintfiet.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for friendly matches against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 as part of preparations for the World Cup.
Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the tournament, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with hopes of advancing beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
