Award-winning actress Lydia Forson has spoken candidly about the challenges she has faced dealing with online harassment from fake social media accounts, describing her experience as a lonely battle against orchestrated attacks on her character.
In an interview with Kafui Dey, Forson recounted how anonymous social media accounts would repeatedly target her, often with vitriolic and offensive comments.
She recalled a recurring instance where a page would send her “Happy Father’s Day” messages every year, jokingly implying that she looked like a man.
The actress also shared experiences of bloggers making derogatory remarks about her natural hair and attempting to ridicule her online image.
“Some bloggers will post my picture with me in natural hair and caption it ‘Lydia Forson rocks messy hairdo’. Why would you call black hair messy? That’s derogatory,” she said, highlighting the unfair double standards she has faced.
Forson added that much of the negativity directed at her stemmed from rejecting unwanted advances or standing firm on her principles.
Not one to shy away from pressure, Lydia says she responds to trolls with combative replies—not out of a desire to confront unnecessarily, but as a reaction to deliberate attacks and misinformation from fake accounts she could trace back to real individuals.
“There are bloggers who would attack you, and I knew them personally. These are people I know… and I would confront them,” she said, adding that while she has sometimes refrained from publicly outing them, she believes in karma and that justice eventually comes.
She described her experience as being a “lone ranger” in a space where the media often portrays individuals either positively or negatively, depending on the narrative chosen.
For Forson, these experiences have strengthened her resilience and shaped the way she navigates public life.
