Ghana head coach Otto Addo has voiced concern over the Black Stars’ prospects of identifying a dependable right-back before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His remarks come in the wake of last Friday’s international friendly against Austria in Vienna, where he was compelled to field FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in an unfamiliar right-back role.
Addressing the media on Sunday ahead of tonight’s friendly against Germany in Stuttgart, Addo acknowledged the limited time available to solve the problem.
“We have two more months to look (for a new right back). I do not think we will find (a right back before the World Cup),” he said.
Despite his uncertainty, the coach insisted that he remains committed to assessing available options within the squad and beyond.
“I think on our database, and also myself in my head, I know all the Ghanaian players who are possible (right back options) who have the strength and quality. We will look at their form and their club, but also the little training we do here,” the 50-year-old said.
Addo’s comments come even as new addition Marvin Senaya made his debut in that very position during the defeat to Austria, adding further intrigue to the selection dilemma.
Ghana will take on Germany at 18:45 GMT, as preparations continue for the World Cup set to be staged later this summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
