The Sowutuom District Court has granted bail to two persons accused of illegally interfering with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) electricity distribution network.
The accused persons are Mawuli Bani, 34, a self-employed technician, and Joyce Codjoe, 62, a retired cashier. Both are residents of Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region.
They have been charged with conspiracy to interfere with ECG’s distribution system and unlawful interference with the company’s distribution network.
Presenting the facts, Detective Chief Inspector Simon Anatakang told the court that on January 13, 2026, the first accused was invited by the second accused, his aunt, to fix a power-related problem at her residence.
The prosecution said the first accused allegedly opened a transformer serving the entire community under the pretext of assessing the problem.
He then climbed an electricity pole and changed the electrical phase on which the second accused person’s house was connected.
According to the prosecution, the action was carried out without authorisation from the Electricity Company of Ghana and affected the distribution system serving the area.
The court heard that the staff of the ECG Achimota District Office received a tip-off about the activity and quickly moved to the scene.
The two accused persons were subsequently arrested and handed over to the Sowutuom Police Station for investigations.
In their caution statements to the Police, the prosecution said the accused persons admitted the offence.
The Electricity Company of Ghana has, in recent times, raised concerns about the growing number of unauthorised persons who interfere with its network.
According to the company, such activities posed serious danger to customers and the public and often resulted in equipment damage and power supply disruptions.
The company is therefore urging the public to refrain from engaging unauthorised persons to resolve electricity-related problems.
It also advised customers to report any suspicious individuals seen working on ECG installations to the Police or the nearest ECG office.
The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
