Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says a potential return of Andre Ayew to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup would not come as a surprise, though he insists the final decision rests with the technical bench.
Ayew has not featured for Ghana since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars exited at the group stage. Since then, the veteran forward has returned to club football, signing for NAC Breda after a six-month spell without a team following his departure from Le Havre.
His return to action has reignited debate over a possible recall to the national side ahead of this summer’s Mundial.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Adams stated: “Fortunately, I’m the minister. Unfortunately, I’m not the coach. The coach has the final say on this. If they include him, why not? I won’t be surprised.”
The 36-year-old was notably absent from Ghana’s squad for upcoming international friendlies against Austria and Germany later this month.
Ayew has made 11 appearances for NAC Breda since joining as a free agent, scoring once — form that has divided opinion but continues to fuel calls for his reintegration.
Ghana’s most capped player remains a towering figure in the national team’s modern history, having featured prominently in multiple AFCON tournaments and representing the country on football’s biggest stage at the World Cup.
