Governance and International Relations expert, Mathias Bonzo Ewewro-Boateng, has questioned the rationale behind plans for another SIM card re-registration exercise by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, calling for clearer communication from the ministry and the government.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, he expressed concerns over the justification being offered for the exercise.

He asked whether issues such as internet fraud are sufficient grounds for undertaking another nationwide SIM re-registration, suggesting that the problem may lie elsewhere.

According to him, telecommunications companies should instead strengthen their internal systems to prevent fraud and protect customers, rather than requiring Ghanaians to register their SIM cards again.

“If someone buys airtime or has money on their account and it is stolen, then the checks should be channelled there,” he stated.

Bonzo also emphasised the need for the government to provide early and detailed explanations on why such an exercise is necessary, including the cost and resources involved. He noted that without proper communication, Ghanaians may not fully understand or support the initiative.

He further criticised what he described as a broader issue of poor policy communication in the country, where major initiatives are often announced without sufficient explanation.

He cited the government’s 24-hour economy policy as an example, arguing that such policies are sometimes introduced without adequate detail for ordinary Ghanaians to grasp their full implications.
