The Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, has criticised the government over the plight of cocoa farmers, arguing that they are being unfairly treated despite promises made.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, he questioned the government’s approach to cocoa pricing.

“If cocoa prices go up and the government makes huge profits, why don’t they use some of that revenue to support cocoa farmers when prices drop? That is what a fair government should do,” he said.

He likened the situation to a one-sided relationship, saying, “No one wants a friendship that is one-sided. It’s like a woman in marriage being deceived by a man who dresses well, comes to woo her, and later exploits her. If she stayed in her marriage, she would have been better off. The same applies to cocoa farmers who trusted the government, they are now suffering because of broken promises.”

Mr. Boateng further drew a comparison with the past, noting that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had a track record of supporting cocoa farmers.

“The NPP government never reduced cocoa prices unfairly, so farmers were protected. Now the NDC government, which promised so many good things, is letting cocoa farmers down” he said.

He condemned the NDC administration for what he described as political deception.

“The government has deceived cocoa farmers. They promised support but have failed to deliver. That’s why some farmers are angry, they see the betrayal for power alone,” he added.

He also slammed the government’s broader economic policies.

“Even with their 24-hour economy, Ghanaians are being let down. Promises were made, but the results are not there,” he said.

Mr. Boateng concluded by urging the government to prioritise cocoa farmers and ensure that policies are implemented in a way that benefits those who produce Ghana’s key export.
