President John Dramani Mahama has directed an increase in the number of personnel to be recruited into Ghana’s security services following a high-level meeting with heads of the country’s security agencies.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office on Monday, March 16, the President met with the leadership of the various security agencies, the Minister for the Interior and the Acting Minister for Defence to discuss the ongoing recruitment process.
After receiving a briefing on the exercise, President Mahama instructed that the number of men and women to be recruited should be increased from 20,000 to 40,000 over a four-year period.
The statement said the directive forms part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture and create more opportunities within the security services.
The President also directed the heads of the security agencies to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the recruitment process.
Officials present at the meeting included the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Adviser on Governmental Affairs, the National Security Coordinator, the Inspector-General of Police, as well as the heads of the Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service and the Narcotics Control Commission.
