The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Sam Jonah, has encouraged students to draw inspiration from the life and achievements of Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, describing her journey as proof that great accomplishments can begin from humble academic beginnings.

Speaking during a Distinguished Fellow Award Ceremony at the university, the Chancellor addressed students directly, urging them to reflect on the Vice President’s path from student life to national leadership.

“To our students, and I address you directly, for you are the reason this University exists, I want you to look carefully at the woman we honour today,” he said.

Sir Sam Jonah reminded students that the Vice President once shared the same experiences they are currently going through as members of the university community.

“She sat in classrooms not unlike the ones you sit in now. She walked the same grounds you walk. She faced the same doubts, the same pressures, the same temptation to underestimate herself that every student faces. And she chose, again and again, the harder path — the path of diligence, of courage, of service,” he stated.

He further highlighted the broader purpose of university education, explaining that academic training should go beyond preparing students solely for employment.

“The education you receive at UCC is not merely preparation for employment. It is preparation for leadership. It is preparation for contribution. It is preparation to become the kind of person who, one day, may stand where Professor Opoku-Agyemang stands today, not because you sought recognition, but because you gave everything you had to something larger than yourself,” he said.

Sir Sam Jonah concluded by urging students to let the Vice President’s life story guide their own ambitions.

“Let her life be your instruction. Let her example be your ambition,” he said.
