Residents and drivers in Akyem Aduasa, a cocoa-farming community in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region, are calling for urgent intervention over the worsening condition of the Swedru–Apoli road.

They say the poor state of the road is damaging vehicles and negatively affecting business activities in the area. Despite being a major contributor to Ghana’s cocoa production, Akyem Aduasa in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region continues to struggle with a poor road network, leaving the community trapped in dust during the dry season and mud when it rains.

Deep potholes and unpaved stretches have made transportation extremely difficult, affecting both farmers and commercial drivers who depend on the road for their daily activities.

The worsening condition of the road has also triggered frustration among residents, with some drivers threatening to boycott future elections, claiming they feel neglected and unrepresented in Parliament.

Drivers say much of their daily income is now spent on frequent vehicle repairs and the purchase of expensive spare parts due to the bad road. Speaking to some residents of Akyem Aduasa, they accused both the previous and current governments, as well as their Member of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, of neglecting the community’s development needs. They claim this lack of attention is holding back progress in the district.

“It’s difficult for cocoa farmers to bring their produce home because drivers refuse to use these roads due to their poor condition,” some residents said angrily.
