Kai Havertz came back to haunt his former club as the substitute earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
The visitors bossed the first half but only carved out one chance of significance when a flowing move down the right ended with Gabriel Martinelli hitting the crossbar.
Leverkusen had been well-organised and content to counter but stormed out of the traps from the restart and took the lead on 46 minutes when Robert Andrich headed home a right-wing corner.
The Gunners probed for an equaliser and got it on 89 minutes when former Leverkusen forward Havertz coolly converted from the spot after a foul on Noni Madueke.
Next up, Arsenal are at home to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday at 17:30 GMT prior to hosting Leverkusen in the second leg of this tie on Tuesday night. Leverkusen face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga at the weekend before travelling to London.
