The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), in collaboration with National Security, has arrested five suspects for allegedly manufacturing and distributing fake vehicle registration plates across Ghana.

In a statement issued on March 10, the DVLA said the suspects were arrested in separate operations at Lapaz, Narmah, Tarkwa and Kumasi.

According to the authority, the suspects have been arraigned before court and remanded into custody. They are expected to reappear in court on March 17, 2026, while two other suspects linked to the syndicate are currently on the run.

Investigations by the DVLA revealed that the fake number plates were often issued together with fraudulent motor insurance documents to make them appear legitimate.

The authority warned that the circulation of counterfeit registration plates poses serious risks to road safety and undermines the integrity of the vehicle registration system.

It also reminded the public that the forgery, use or display of fake DV plates is a criminal offence under Regulation 23 of L.I. 2180, and offenders will face prosecution.

The DVLA has therefore urged motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to fake vehicle registration plates.
