The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) has commenced a four-day Operational Field Visit (OFV) to the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region.
The exercise is aimed at bridging the gap between classroom theory and field-based operational studies by giving students firsthand exposure to internal security operations and civil-military coordination within complex environments.

The visit, which runs from today through Wednesday, March 11, 2026, involves students of Senior Staff Course 47 (CSE 47).
According to the college, the main objective of the exercise is to produce senior and mid-level officers capable of analysing complex security challenges and providing sound military advice at both operational and strategic levels.

The Nkwanta South area was selected for the study due to recurring security challenges, including communal tensions, chieftaincy disputes and land ownership conflicts.
These issues, combined with socio-economic concerns, have led to the deployment of the Ghana Army to support civil authorities in restoring and maintaining peace in the area.

Speaking during the exercise, Colonel Raymond Quartey, Chief Instructor of the Alpha Division, Army Faculty at GAFCSC and leader of the delegation, explained that the visit is being conducted under the theme: “Strengthening Military Aid to Civil Authority/Internal Security Operations in the Oti Region: Enhancing Readiness, Coordination, and Responsiveness for National Development.”
According to him, the field visit will enable participants to examine the key drivers of conflict in the Nkwanta area while assessing the effectiveness of current Ghana Army deployments.
He added that the students will analyse command and control arrangements among various security agencies and also evaluate civil-military relations in the municipality.
By applying the tactical estimate process to real-life scenarios, the participants are expected to develop practical recommendations to enhance operational effectiveness and conflict management in the region.
Colonel Quartey expressed confidence that the objectives of the visit would be achieved, ultimately contributing to the military’s readiness to support national development goals.
Welcoming the delegation, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, expressed gratitude to the leadership of the college for selecting the municipality for the academic and operational exercise.
He noted that the presence of the college could help generate valuable security insights and contribute to the promotion of lasting peace in the area, which is crucial for economic activities and business growth.
Mr. Awal further assured the delegation of the Assembly’s full cooperation and support throughout their stay, emphasising the importance of the collaboration for both academic purposes and the long-term stability of the municipality.
