The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has presented seven outboard motors to artisanal canoe owners in Senya Breku whose equipment was stolen during a violent pirate attack.
The intervention, carried out on Tuesday, March 3, aims to cushion affected fishermen and restore livelihoods disrupted by the incident.
The donation follows a harrowing attack on Thursday, February 26, when armed men reportedly ambushed fishermen off the coast of Senya Breku in the Central Region.
The victims, who had set out in the early hours to fish, were reportedly returning to shore when the attackers, operating a black boat, allegedly opened fire and made away with outboard motors and generator sets.
A total of 71 fishermen were affected. Although all were later rescued, many were left stranded at sea for hours without engines to power their canoes back to safety.
The incident sparked concern among coastal fishing communities, prompting calls for stronger security measures.
Presenting the motors, Madam Arthur reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting fisherfolk and enhancing security within Ghana’s territorial waters.
