Technical advisor Winfried Schäfer has vowed to help Ghana’s senior national team regain its stature in African football.
The German coach joined the Black Stars following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Under his guidance, Ghana secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
In an interview with Medeama FM, Schäfer recounted how the Ghana Football Association (GFA) approached him.
“After the Black Stars failed to qualify for AFCON 2025, the GFA President met me and asked me to join the team as a technical advisor to help them qualify for the World Cup,” he said.
The 72-year-old coach expressed his determination to see Ghana return to the top tier of African football.
“I’m happy about this opportunity. Ghana is a big name, the heart of Africa, and I want to help the team reclaim its number one position,” Schäfer added.
The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in March for international friendlies against Austria and Germany as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
