Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced that discussions are at an advanced stage to secure a permanent solution to restore water supply to residents of Teshie-Nungua and surrounding communities following the shutdown of the desalination plant.
The move comes amid persistent water shortages that have affected households and businesses in the area for months.
The Teshie-Nungua desalination plant was shut down in late 2025 due to unpaid debts, contractual disputes and maintenance challenges.
Since then, residents in Teshie, Nungua, Spintex and nearby communities have experienced irregular water supply, with many forced to rely on water tankers and other private sources.
According to GWL, high-level engagements are underway to revive the facility and address the underlying issues that led to its closure.
The Managing Director of the company expressed optimism that ongoing consultations among key stakeholders would lead to a sustainable and lasting solution.
“The president has directed that the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice, and the Attorney General, together with Ghana Water Limited and the shareholders of the desalination should engage for a solution to get the plant back to work. On Monday, we met, and we will be meeting again on February 19,” he said.
Adam Mutawakilu disclosed this to journalists on the sidelines of the launch of the Revenue Arrears Reduction and Electronic Payment Campaign on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, noting that the renewed efforts are aimed at resolving the impasse and easing the burden on affected communities.
